Rev Prof Philip Hughes holds graduate qualifications in philosophy, education and theology. He completed his doctorate in northern Thailand, studying the rise of the Christian community within a Buddhist context, integrating sociology, anthropology, and theology of culture.
From 1985 to 2016, he was the Senior Research Officer at the Christian Research Association. He also worked with Edith Cowan University’s Centre for Social Justice on research related to religious faith, community, and well-being.
His academic focus has been the changing Western culture and its implications for religion in Australia. He has extensively analysed census data and surveys, exploring how Australians find meaning in life.
Prof Hughes has published 65 books and hundreds of articles. Since 2017, he has served part-time at Alphacrucis College, supervising doctoral students and chairing the ethics committee. He is currently Acting Head of Pilgrim College and recently published “What is Happening to Religion in Australia? Understanding the Trends.”
