From the doctrine of the Trinity to Luther’s Ninety Five Theses, via people like St Francis of Assisi and events like the Crusades, we’ll see how people have followed Jesus in the past and reflect on how we can emulate their successes and learn from their failures.

This unit provides an overview of the theology of Paul’s letters as a prelude to the study of one of the most profound writings of the New Testament: his epistle to the Romans. Students will engage with both old and new perspectives on Paul’s thought, the debate over the purpose of the letter, and grapple with the difficult exegetical questions that frequently arise in the study of Romans. The focus is on the first eight chapters, which have much to say about our understanding of God, sin, justification, the role of the Holy Spirit, and the hope of resurrection.

The Pentateuch forms the foundation for the rest of the Bible. It introduces God as creator, saviour, covenant maker, lawgiver, and judge. It also reveals the purpose God has given humanity, to image his benevolent rule in the world, but also how humanity rejects God’s rule and fails to live as God intended.

The Pentateuch shows us how God reconciles a sinful people to himself through redemption, ransom, and cleansing. It also tells of God’s purpose to bless all the nations through the people of Israel, and ultimately through his promised king. This all lays the foundation for better understanding the person and work of Jesus and what it means to live as his people today.

This unit explores these themes with a special focus on the books of Genesis and Deuteronomy.
