Ezekiel is a powerful and confronting book—one, perhaps, that doesn’t often get an airing in our Churches. Perhaps that’s because we don’t quite know what to do with Ezekiel’s mysterious visions and strange actions, and his challenging message of judgement and hope. Or perhaps it’s because we don’t quite know how to connect his context in exile with our context in twenty-first century Australia. This workshop on Preaching to Exiles aims to address that.
We’ll spend some time becoming familiar with the book and its context, as well as exploring the connections between our context and Ezekiel’s. We’ll consider his message of judgement and of hope, its theological ground and significance and its application today. We’ll address some (but not, I suspect all!) of the questions and issues that strike you when you read the book, and spend some time considering how we might design an expository sermon series on Ezekiel.
I think you’ll find yourself with a better understanding of the book and its message to use—you may even decide to add it to your preaching calendar!
