In this unit we learn about the history of evangelical Christianity, from its precursors in seventeenth-century continental pietism and puritanism, through its rise in the eighteenth-century transatlantic revivals and expansion in the nineteenth-century, to its global spread and diversification in the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.
We will consider topics like the rise of mission, Pentecostalism and fundamentalism, and investigate the ways evangelicals have responded to modern questions of science, gender and liberal theology. We will learn more about how the evangelical movement has shaped modern Christianity and, in the process, learn more about ourselves and our churches.
