STUDYING COUNSELLING AT MORLING

Professional counsellors have a profound influence on the lives of their clients in helping them to understand and interpret their life and circumstances. You will benefit from the fact that all faculty and adjunct lecturers are themselves highly regarded counselling practitioners and this assists in creating a program that is dynamic as well as up to date with best industry practice.

SPECIALTY FOR THERAPISTS – PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COURSES

If you are already a therapist and looking to increase your scope of practice, we have a range of specialty units that may interest you. These are:

• Child & Adolescent Counselling 1 & 2
• Crisis & Trauma Counselling 1 & 2
• Group Dynamics & Facilitation & Group Therapy 2
• Relationship Counselling 1 & 2

These units of study are open to those who are already qualified counsellors and are conducted in a number of different delivery modes. You will be learning from highly qualified and experienced practitioners who are willing to guide and share their practical knowledge and experience while also being grounded in sound academic rigor. 

Completing these specialty units as an AUDIT (not for academic credit) is a very affordable means of gaining your annual required Professional Development hours. 

SPECIALTY UNITS AVAILABLE IN THE SECOND HALF OF 2019

CHILD & ADOLESCENT COUNSELLING 2

UNIT CODE: CO741
Dates: 24 July to 30 October – 13 weeks
Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 9.15pm
Cost: AU$500 (audit only)

This unit of study will further expand on the knowledge and skills developed in Child
and Adolescent Counselling 1 (CO731).

• Explore specific therapeutic approaches for working with children and
  adolescents and ways to determine the most suitable approach.
• Get insights about the skills needed to work collaboratively with the parents
  and caregivers of the child or adolescent client.

Develop an advanced understanding of the modalities and settings of child
and adolescent work, including development of counselling modalities like
family and group work as well as working in specific contexts where child
and adolescent counselling is provided eg. Schools.

CRISIS AND TRAUMA COUNSELLING 2

UNIT CODE: CO742
Dates: 10-12 July and 15-16 July from 9am to 5pm
Cost: AU$500 (audit only)

In this unit students will further develop their understanding of the impact of
psychological trauma on individuals, families and communities and recognise its
culturally appropriate expressions.

• Apply your knowledge of the current theories and models for understanding to
  working with people and groups who have, or are experiencing crisis,
  psychological trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This will
  include the neurobiological, psychosocial and as well as socio-spiritual-cultural
  elements of trauma.
• Apply your counselling skills and methods to the specialised assessment and
  counselling of clients who are experiencing crisis and trauma.
  
  Field opportunities to observe working with people in crisis and trauma will be
  provided.

GROUP THERAPY 2

UNIT CODE: CO743
Dates: 6 -7 September | 27-28 September
Fridays and Saturdays from 9am to 5 pm
Cost: AU$500 (audit only)

Develop the ability to apply advanced group facilitation to diverse group therapy and
treatment programs including anger management, substance dependency, domestic
violence, psycho- education, anxiety management and step programs.

RELATIONSHIP COUNSELLING 2 (INTEGRATION & APPLIED PRACTICE)

UNIT CODE: CO744
Dates: 25 July to 24 October – 13 weeks
Thursdays evenings from 6:30pm to 9:15pm
Cost: AU$500 (audit only)

The focus of this unit will be on assisting the student to further translate the theories
and concepts learnt in unit 1 into action. Knowledge and skills, particularly with
working with couples, will be strengthened.

• Course Objectives:
  Identify problematic patterns of interaction and communication in relationships
• Practice skills in conceptualising problems systemically, developing a
  therapeutic alliance with multiple members of a system and counselling from a
  relational perspective
• Understand the impact of specific problems (e.g. addictive behaviours,
  domestic violence, mental disorders, physical illness, immigration, affairs) on
  family and couple functioning.

Identify and respond to ethical issues arising in this area of work.
