BIBLE AND THEOLOGY:
SUMMER SCHOOL ONLINE & SUMMER INTENSIVES
GET A HEAD START ON NEXT YEAR'S STUDY, OR CATCH UP ON A MISSED UNIT
Summer School Online units are designed for those students who would like to get a head start on their next year's study, or catch up on a unit they may have missed during the year. They are delivered fully online, in an accelerated mode, over 10 weeks, and including a full week's holiday break over the Christmas/New Year period.
Summer Blended Intensive units are designed to be completed via a series of online modules, followed by on-campus intensive days and assessment work. Some blended intensives may offer livestream (LS) delivery of the on-campus intensive days - please refer to the Units Scheduled for each year, for whether LS is available for your intensive, before enrolling.
We recommend that students who are enrolling in Summer units prepare early for any books they will need to order, or borrow prior to the library closure period.
Morling College Christmas Closure: Morling College (including the library) will be closed from 3pm (local time) 24 December 2021 and will reopen on Tuesday 4 January 2022.

This unit seeks to introduce students to the basic perspectives and the competencies they will need to work effectively as chaplains. It focuses on chaplaincy skills and practices, especially in the areas of mental health, referrals and holistic care. The emphasis is on what chaplains are expected to know and be able to do in mental health management rather than on the biblical basis and theology of chaplaincy. Students taking this unit will normally have completed a foundation level unit in Pastoral Care.
This unit requires 20 hours of practical experience as part of the assessment criteria.
The content of this unit includes modules on mental health and making appropriate referrals that were originally created to meet the requirements of the National School Chaplaincy Program, which was at that time administered under the authority of the commonwealth government. Responsibility for delivery of the NSCP has since been transferred to participating state and territory governments. The NSW government currently offers the following advice regarding qualifications for NSCP-funded chaplains in NSW schools:
For acceptance into the role of school chaplain in NSW under the NSCP, the minimum qualification is a Certificate IV in Youth Work or Certificate IV in Pastoral Care (or equivalent). A person who holds a higher level qualification, such as a diploma or bachelor degree, in a relevant field of education may also be considered. A qualification must include competencies (or equivalent) in mental health and making appropriate referrals. Not all relevant qualifications involve the completion of ‘competencies’ (e.g. bachelor degrees). In these cases, a school should take into account any completed units/subjects relevant to the areas of ‘mental health’ and ‘making appropriate referrals’.

In this unit we’ll be learning about how God has worked in history from the English Reformation to the present. We’ll discover the people, movements and ideas that made an impact – for better or worse. You'll learn about everything from Henry VIII to the abolition of slavery, from missions to the church in Nazi Germany, and from Baptist beginnings to Vatican II. We’ll see how people have followed Jesus in the past and reflect on how we can emulate their successes and learn from their failures.

This is the first of two foundational New Testament units. It provides an overview of the four gospels and the portraits that they paint of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus—with a focus on how Jesus inaugurated the Kingdom of God in word and deed. It also offers an introduction to the context in which the gospels were written and in which the events they describe took place, and the core message of the gospels for Christian readers today.

This unit provides an overview of the General Epistles, which include the letters attributed to James, Peter, John, and Jude. Unfortunately, these letters are often neglected by readers of the New Testament. However, they have much to teach us about the relationship of faith and works, the Christian response to persecution, the importance of the doctrine of the final judgement, or the danger of false teachings.
After a brief overview of the collection as a whole, students will focus on the texts of 1 John and 1 Peter, looking at introductory issues about the authorship, date, audience, and purpose, as well as an exegetical analysis of the chapters in these two significant texts.
